A Gibraltar registered aircraft, including any associated store of spare parts, may be used as security for a loan or other financial obligation. Owners may choose to register that mortgage with the GCAA, which maintains a dedicated Aircraft Mortgage Register for this purpose.

Registration of mortgage is not mandatory. However, registering provides important legal protection. A registered mortgage takes priority over any unregistered charge or interest in the aircraft.

How to Register a Mortgage

Applications must be submitted by or on behalf of the mortgagee using Form REG 11 – Application to Register an Aircraft Mortgage. Separate applications are required for each aircraft where multiple aircraft are covered by one mortgage, or where one aircraft is subject to more than one mortgage.

Once registered, the GCAA will confirm the date and time of entry and the register number and will notify both the mortgagor and the registered owner.

Discharge and Cancellation

When a mortgage is discharged or deregistered, the mortgagee must notify the GCAA using Form REG 10 – Application for Variation/Removal of an Aircraft Mortgage Registration. For cancellation of a mortgage registration, a notarised and apostilled consent and release document is required, along with the original Form REG 10 to be sent to the GCAA by courier within 60 days.

Applications and enquiries may be submitted to registration@gar.aero.
