CAP OPS 05 – Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) provides guidance to General Aviation operators on the certification, airworthiness, and operational approval requirements for the use of Electronic Flight Bags (EFBs) and associated aircraft computing devices.

The GCAA supports the use of Electronic Flight Bags to enhance operational efficiency, reduce reliance on paper documentation, and improve access to critical flight information. EFBs enable flight crews to securely store, display, update, and process operational data such as aircraft manuals, electronic charts, performance calculations, weather information, flight plans, and other essential operational documents.

The GCAA accepts both portable and installed EFB systems, provided they comply with the applicable operational and airworthiness requirements. Depending on the aircraft category and the type of EFB, General Aviation operators may be required to submit either a Declaration of Compliance or obtain formal GCAA approval before commencing EFB operations.

Before introducing an EFB into service, operators must demonstrate that the system is reliable, secure, and suitable for its intended operational use. This includes establishing appropriate operating procedures, conducting risk assessments, implementing configuration and data management processes, appointing an EFB Administrator, and providing appropriate flight crew training. Where applicable, operators must also complete an operational evaluation to demonstrate that the EFB provides an equivalent level of safety to traditional paper-based systems.

Applications requiring GCAA approval must be submitted using Form OPS 09 – Application for Electronic Flight Bag (EFB) Approval, together with the supporting documentation specified in CAP OPS 05. Following satisfactory review, the GCAA will issue the applicable Specific Approval.
