CAP OPS 12 – Steep Approach Operations provides guidance to General Aviation operators on the approval requirements for conducting steep approach operations into aerodromes requiring approach angles greater than 4.5°, such as London City Airport and other aerodromes with published special approach procedures.

General Aviation operators intending to conduct steep approach operations must obtain GCAA approval before commencing such operations. Where applicable, the approval may be recognised by the State of the destination aerodrome in accordance with its national requirements.

To support an application, operators must demonstrate that the aircraft is suitably equipped and approved for the intended operation, flight crew are appropriately qualified and current, the navigation database is current, and appropriate operating procedures and checklists have been established. Applications should be supported by the relevant Aircraft Flight Manual (AFM)Minimum Equipment List (MEL), Operations Manual procedures, and, where applicable, evidence of an equivalent approval issued by another ICAO Contracting State.

Operators are also required to establish appropriate operating procedures, weather minima, performance calculations, crew briefing procedures, and training programmes to ensure the safe conduct of steep approach operations. Initial and recurrent training should provide flight crews with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to safely conduct these specialised approaches.

Applications must be submitted using Form OPS 14 – Application for Steep Approach Approval, together with the supporting documentation specified in CAP OPS 12. Following satisfactory review, the GCAA will issue the applicable Specific Approval.
