A Certificate of Airworthiness (CofA) is required before an aircraft may be operated on the Gibraltar Aircraft Register. The certificate confirms that the aircraft complies with the applicable airworthiness requirements and is in a condition for safe operation.
The GCAA issues Certificates of Airworthiness (C of A) for eligible aircraft. Certificates are normally valid for 12 months from the date of issue. However, where maintenance arrangements are established under a long-term contract with a maintenance organisation accepted by the GCAA, a Certificate of Airworthiness may be issued with a validity period of up to 24 months.
Application Process
Applications for the issue of a Certificate of Airworthiness must be submitted using Form AIR 01 – Application for the Issue of a Certificate of Airworthiness, together with the applicable fee and the supporting documentation specified in CAP AIR 01, Appendix A.
Upon receipt of the application, the GCAA will review the submitted documentation to verify compliance with the applicable certification requirements. If the application is satisfactory, a physical inspection of the aircraft and a review of the associated technical records will be arranged with a GCAA Airworthiness Inspector.
During the inspection, the GCAA Airworthiness Inspector will verify that:
- the aircraft conforms to its approved type design;
- all mandatory airworthiness requirements have been complied with;
- the aircraft is correctly identified and marked;
- the required documentation and records are complete and satisfactory; and
- the aircraft is in a condition for safe operation.
Findings
Should any deficiencies be identified during the document review or aircraft inspection, the GCAA Airworthiness Inspector will raise Findings. All Findings must be satisfactorily addressed and accepted by the GCAA before a Certificate of Airworthiness can be issued.
Applicants are encouraged to submit their application sufficiently in advance of the intended registration or entry into service to allow adequate time for the review of the application, completion of any required inspections, and the satisfactory closure of any findings.
Issue of the Certificate
Once the GCAA is satisfied that the aircraft complies with all applicable airworthiness requirements and all Findings have been closed, a Certificate of Airworthiness will be issued.
